OpenAI: 8 years and tens of billions of dollars

Over the past couple of years, OpenAI has risen to the third position in terms of market capitalization among global startups, raising $10 billion in venture investments, with the company’s flagship product, GPTChat, becoming the fastest-growing internet service in history!

How did the company achieve this? And why did it take them a whole 8 years to make a significant impact?

OpenAI was launched back in 2015, with its founders, including Sam Altman and Elon Musk, setting the goal of «providing the public access to tools that will help society pave the way towards creating full-fledged artificial intelligence».

  1. In 2015, OpenAI received a grant of $1 billion from private investors.
  2. In 2016, they received an additional $120,000 from YCombinator.
  3. In 2019, Microsoft invested another $1 billion.
  4. In 2023, an additional $10 billion came from Microsoft.

In 2022, OpenAI incurred losses of $500 million, even with their existing revenue. It’s unclear exactly how much money OpenAI was losing each year.

Today, OpenAI stands as one of the most in-demand and technologically advanced companies globally, with an estimated valuation of $80 billion.

«Looking at the period from 2015 to 2023, the sums the company receives at the start compared to the current outcome suggest a natural conclusion. Developments in artificial intelligence require significantly more resources, both in terms of money and infrastructure, to achieve truly impressive and substantial results.

At present, the full-scale release of commercially viable standalone products that generate profit is only accessible to either state entities with unlimited funding or major international corporations such as Microsoft, Amazon, Google», CEO Alexey Ognev explained during the webinar.

The development of the RWA projects like RWA-Bank and RWA-Marketplace will ensure the necessary level of financial security and stability, allowing us to focus on projects on par with OpenAI in a year, or perhaps collaborations with companies of such stature.
