How do global corporations make money on our data?

Not so long ago we wrote that data is the oil of the 21st century. And not only high-tech people, but politicians, analysts, financial experts, etc. agree with this statement. Yes, the data have become assets! But for some reason, only big corporations have assets.

IBM analysts openly call the data market an oligopoly where big players (such as Google, Facebook, Microsoft) control most of the pie. They also claim that only 20% of the data is on the Internet, while the remaining 80% is stored in the depths of these companies.

❓ Why do corporations collect our data?

The main value of data is that it helps to improve the product and attract more users, which will create even more data that will allow to attract more users. And it's a vicious cycle in which the world's giants make billions or even more on our data.

❓ Why don't people make money on their data themselves?

Evgeny Morozov, a world-renowned IT researcher, thinks that it is unfair that everybody earns on the users' data, except them. In his opinion, the data is like natural resources: it should belong to people, not corporations. "If all resources are taken over by Google and Facebook, they will allow us to breathe only when we watch advertising," he said.
