Today, powerful computing systems are capable of solving tasks that are unattainable for ordinary computers.
The supercomputer industry includes two directions:
The former have long proven their value for science and business, while the latter are just beginning to take shape.
Corporate supercomputers
They emerged in the 1960s to address complex scientific and defense challenges:
CDC 6600 (1964) – the very first model. It performed 3 million operations per second and remained the fastest until 1969.
Modern corporate supercomputers are far more powerful:
Market and forecasts:
Personal supercomputers
Compact, powerful machines for individual users emerged in the late 1980s.
The first model – Intel iPSC (1985) – included several dozen processors working together.
A more modern version – Cray CX1 (2008) – a desktop supercomputer with numerous processors for science and engineering.
We wrote about which personal devices are being released right now in the post «Future Is Near: Overview of Supercomputer Market».
DigiU is moving toward creating personal supercomputers. We’ve already introduced the concept of our first AI-focused device. It performs complex computations locally and securely stores user data.
